Some Tracfone customers have been ported to Metro by T-Mobile

Tracfone announced that it discovered a security breach last week. Today, some of the affected customers have suddenly discovered that they are already on Metro by T-Mobile’s network without their consent.

This may be because of last week’s security breach. And while the wireless provider has done its part to alert its customers, it noted that they were unable to reach customers who have already been ported out. 

“We were recently made aware of bad actors gaining access to a limited number of customer accounts and, in some cases, fraudulently transferring, or porting out, mobile telephone numbers to other carriers.

These bad actors may have had access to your name, address, PIN code, account number, secret question (but not answer) and email address to the extent you provided us with such information.”

T-Mobile has conducted its own investigation to address the issue. And while there were Tracfone customers who were ported out to Metro by T-Mobile, the Un-carrier found that there was “no fraud or data breach of any sort.” 

T-Mobile also shared that unauthorized transfers “are unfortunately an industry-wide issue.”

Tracfone’s new owner, Verizon Wireless, has already taken necessary steps to help protect its customers. When an account transfer request is made, they will now be sending a text notification to customers. This is all in the hopes of stopping unauthorized transfers. 

Verizon also notes that the breach has only affected 6,000 Tracfone customers.
